Russell has had it’s share of train derailments and re-routes because of many accidents, including the elimination of the Tuttle Mountain bridge (now Turtle).  The Western Railroad, built through the incredible Westfield River Valley both beautiful and back breaking for the workers who built this incredible economic changing form of transportation that opened the Western end of Massachusetts to the Pioneer Valley.  Historical credit John Ham book, George Ford Collection, Hilltown Hikers historical research archive.
