HILLTOWN HISTORY Wildcat Springs opened several miles south of town on Route 20 in Chester, the roads were still unpaved. Souvenirs and refreshments were sold to adventuresome motorists who stopped on their way through the Berkshires. In the late 1920s, the establishment was moved to a new location directly across the street.
The name Wildcat Springs was chosen to reflect the numerous mountain springs in the area where wildcats were said to appear. At one time, it is said, wildcats were kept in cages there for the amusement of those who passed by. Among the previous owners were the Gehmans in the 1920s. and later the Giovanellis, from 1958 until August, 1976. It was then purchased by the Berges and sold to Arlie and Diane Davidson on Jan. 1, 1979. It is now no longer in operation. It’s currently home to Salvini Associates surveyors. Chester Historical Society.
