HILLTOWN HISTORY Zenas Searle was a native of Southampton, and settled in Chester in 1787, on a farm about half a mile south of the meeting house; most of it he reclaimed from the primitive forest. Mr. Searle lost his life in middle age. While adjusting a yoke upon a pair of young and imperfectly trained cattle, preparatory to hauling some hay to his barn, they became frightened and ran away, dragging Zenas, one of whose feet was inextricably entangled in the chain, after them. The Injuries he received proved fatal. His son, Zenas Searle, resided on the homestead until moving to Ohio. A daughter, Rachel, married the late Luther Edwards, of Southampton, a gentleman well known to a large portion of the citizens of Hampshire County, and the father of the Rev Henry S. Edwards, a graduate. of Amherst, and the able and eloquent minister of the Congregational church at North Middleborough. Another daughter married. Strong Clark, also of Southampton.  The “old government road runs adjacent to his property perpendicular with todays Skyline Trail. A stone post in the woods remains in his remembrance.
