Removing Gravesleigh Dam and Bridge: Removed the 37 foot long, poured concrete Gravesleigh Pond Dam, plus its concrete abutments (for a total length of 60 feet). Removed the deteriorated concrete access bridge just downstream of the dam that restricted the flow of the brook, causing channel scouring as well as erosion of the adjacent banks.
Gravesleigh Pond Dam was built on Sackett Brook in the early 1930s, by property owner Merle Graves, to create a small pond for his hunting and fishing lodge. The dam’s impoundment, called East Pond on some maps, had mostly silted in. According to a state analysis, this dam ranked in the top 5% of dams in Massachusetts in terms of the benefit afforded by its removal. Courtesy Mass Audubon.
