INDIAN BONES FOUND
Said to Be Those of Man Drowned In 1865. Berkshire Eagle. Elwell Burial Ground at Goose Pond Causeway
A mystery was quickly solved Wednesday by Chief of Police Frank. T Coughlin after four boys had disturbed the bones of the dead. The boys, John Turner, 14. William Pinkall, 13, Wallage Olda, 17, and Vernon Baker, 15, were digging worms at the head of Lower Goose pond when the shovel of one struck a skull. The boys, after taking the skull and ribs attached to a part of the backbone from the earth, brought them to one of their homes. Chief Coughlin, accompanied by State Patrolman Edward Haughey, Investigated and the bones were taken to Chief Coughlin’s office.
Dr George S. Wickham was called and stated the bones were many years old. The skull is believed to be that of Chief Mohhekenuck, who was was drowned in Upper Goose pond about 75 years ago.
Berkshire Gleaner July 13, 1917 It seems that a man by the name of Ellwell and the Indian were fishing from a rock on Upper Goose pond when Ellwell by some mishap fell into the pond.
The Indian tried to rescue his companion with result that both were drowned. As the news became known a party went to the spot, among them Kendall Baird, who being an expert swimmer and diver, failed to find the bodies. The bodies were not found until later when they came to the surface They were buried between the Upper and Lower Goose pond on a rise of ground near the upper end of the Lower pond about eight rods south of the lower end of Sucker brook that connects the two ponds which are only a few hundred feet apart. The graves were marked with four rough stones.
