WELCOME
To the Tom Leonard Shelter!
This shelter is dedicated to the memory of a young man who spent his few years of adulthood in service to the Appalachian Trail as a Ridge Runner. In 1985 his life was cut short by an unexplained brief neurologic illness. This shelter was designed and built by volunteers from the Appalachian Trail Committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club during the Summer of 1988. The material was airlifted to the site using a Sikorski Skycrane helicopter of the Air National Guard. Materials were purchased with funding from AMC, and an anonymous donor. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management donated the land and the outhouse.
