Trolley car number 30 crashes twice in Lee!
A Berkshire Street Railway car crashes twice in Lee, in 1903 and 1904.
BY GARY LEVEILLE
In January 1903, trolley service in south Berkshire temporarily stopped. A Berkshire Street Railway car, running from Stockbridge to the East Lee trolley barn, left the track on the Housatonic River bridge at East Lee (near present-day Big Y Supermarket).

The metal truss bridge and trolley car were badly damaged. The covered bridge beside the trolley span was not damaged and remained open to older means of transportation: horses, wagons, and the pedestrians. The trolley car (Number 30) was repaired, but retained a reputation as a jinxed car that was avoided by many riders. Perhaps their instinct was correct, because in 1904 the same car derailed twice in Lenoxdale and narrowly missed plunging into the Housatonic River.
You can clearly see the old truss bridge abutments still today on Old Pleasant Street in Lee. Seems like Lee was destined to have the most trolley accidents of anywhere on the line!
