At the junction of Old Pleasant Street and Birch Street in Lee, the Berkshire Street Railway continued towards Stockbridge over the Housatonic River, the covered bridge was Old Pleasant Street, Big Y was the trolley car barn and Lee power Station. We took a look at both the old trolley bridge and covered bridge abutments and heard stories told by the property owner at this corner parcel.
CAR WRECKS IRON BRIDGE.
BERKSHIRE ELECTRIC LEAVES THE TRACK
PLUNGES INTO THE HOUSATONIC.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE OF MOTORMAN AND CONDUCTOR. 1903
Two men bruised and cut, one of them his garments soaked in icy water crawled into the sub-station of the Borkshire electric road on Pleasant Street in the under zero cold of a little past the turn of midnight of Monday. They told a harrowing tale of a horrible accident that had just come to their car. It had struck the iron bridge alongside the old wooden covered bridge of the highway and plunged into the river. The circumstances were these: the next to the last car from the south came along at high speed to the sharp curve below the bridge, and the motorman, as customary at this point put on the air brakes, but for some reason they refused to work and the rear truck of the car left the track. This threw it against a pole near the bridge and sheered it off close to the ground, also breaking down a guy pole, while the wires pulled down by this struck the next pole farther back.
