Hiking the Chester and Becket Railroad,, this section in Chester from Hampden Street at the Chester and Becket Trailhead heading East on the old railgrade which parallels Hampden Street and then Route 20 on Fish and Wildlife Land to where the railroad joined the Boston and Albany at the Route 20 underpass. Stone culverts are dry laid with massive rock. The underpass tunnel did not exist when this route was created to bring granite from the Becket Quarry to the finishing mills in Chester Factory Village….it went over the Route 20 highway. When Route 20 was rebuilt in the early 1900’s, the bridge was created even though the trains were no longer running, in fact it was never used!
