Saturday’s flash hike destination was Pittsfield State Forest for a planned 6+ mile loop to some great vistas but the weather did not cooperate. Rain to start at Lulu Brook Trailhead on Cascade Street with some fog so we changed our route to start at Lulu Brook Trail for some great waterfalls. Taking this trail, single track right along Lulu Brook with a gradual climb of 1,000 feet of elevation was dramatic and beautiful. At the junction of the Honwee Loop Trail we headed left and got onto the Berry Pond Circuit Road and encountered zero visibility at 2,100 feet and a big temperature drop! Not being able to see more than 10 feet or so ahead of us GPS was necessary to find our way. We took the Taconic Crest Trail to the summit of Berry Hill coming out to the large parking lot where we could not even tell it was a parking lot! Sticking close to each other, over to Berry Pond and its CCC built bridge, to the radio tower where we encountered all ice on the trail at 2,200 feet, then started our descent to Tilden Swamp and it’s impressive beaver dam and down the mountain on the Parker Brook Trail, out of the fog and rain after dropping about 500 feet of elevation! Took the Vosburgh CC Trail over to the ski jump to explore here and back to our cars for a 6.5 mile loop. Know how to navigate with GPS when you head out hiking, you never know the conditions you will run into, it will guide you everytime!
