Mt. Sinai continued to be the scene of Shaker services until about 1854, when the revival spiri began to dissipate Itself. The Shakers maintained the site as a shrine for a number of years thereafter but vandals from nearby communities stole the carved stones and other relics. The Shakers razed the remaining buildings and markers. When they finished, only the foundation stones of the inclement weather sheds remained; the forest, reclaiming the clearing, soon covered all traces of the site. In 1936, the Pittsfield State Forest engulfed 1,350 acres of Shaker land in Hancock which includes Shaker Mountain aka Mount Sinai where the Hancock Shakers went to pray and dance every May and September.

Saturday’s flash hike took us to Hancock to hike the Shaker settlemens of both the Hancock and New Lebanon Shakers. Parking on Route 20 across from the Shaker Hancock Village the trail goes into the woods as part of the Pittsfield State Forest.
