Our hike at the East Portal of the Hoosac Tunnel in Florida included finding the history here of the railroad and how it has changed over the years. The Northern route across Western Mass was created as an answer to the Western Railroad which ran from Westfield thru Chester and the Keystone Arches. There was no northern route, hence the building the hoosac tunnel thru the impassable mountains. The Trestle over the Deerfield river is a very important piece of the East Portal. It brings the rail line over to the Rowe side (east side) where the Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington railroad went off to the north to Vermont, and the mainline continued southward to the Hoosac Tunnel station about 1/2 mile away, and further on to all points east.
