Raycroft Lookout from the 360 cam, built in 1934 by the CCC, located at the southern edge of the Monroe State Forest, is a stone overlook with scenic views of the Deerfield River. It is one of the most dramatic vistas in Massachusetts. The overlook has a stone platform about 10 by 20 feet jutting out over the valley. There are mortar remnants on the interior wall at the edge of the overlook that indicate the location of a former plaque. The lookout is in poor condition with large portions of the coping missing and other sections loose. The short 1 mile trail also has great views from the powerline cut.
Saturday’s flash hike took us to Franklin County and the Northernmost hilltowns of Florida, Monroe and Charlemont on the infamous Mohawk Mahican Trail to explore the Deerfield River area with DCR Ranger Christian Drake.
