The Mohawk Trail State Forest has the
greatest population of 150-foot tall trees in New England. With 72 trees (71 white pines and one white ash) measured to a height of 150 feet or more. The single tallest tree in New England, The Jake Swamp white pine stands 166.1 feet tall.(2004) The 18 statewide height champions are located here. The champion white ash of the Northeast, in 2004 measued at 151.5 feet, 15 white ash have been measured to heights of 140 feet or more. The heights of these trees today are over 160 feet.
The oldest dated hemlock in Massachusetts is here, cored at 488 years old! The largest confirmed acreage of old growth forest in the state is here at Mohawk. Hiking 7 miles of this State Forest and out by 7pm only gave us time to explore just a fraction of sights to see!
We started this hike from the Deerfield River on the Elder Grove Trail at River Road just after Zoar Picnic Area in the village of Zoar in Florida hiking into Charlemont.
Saturday’s flash hike took us to Franklin County and the Northernmost hilltowns of Florida, Monroe and Charlemont on the infamous Mohawk Mahican Trail to explore the Deerfield River area with DCR Ranger Christian Drake. Photo cred: liz, karen, stephanie, nancy and adam.
