I finally climbed the Memorial Tower! First time for Russ and myself and it was worth getting over the claustrophobia and fear of heights! THE MASSACHUSETTS VETERANS WAR MEMORIAL This tower stands as a memorial to the men and women of Massachusetts who have fallen while in the service of our nation. It commemorates their sacrifice and reminds us of their devotion and the hope for peace. The tower’s design reinforces its purpose. Outside, the monument dominates the landscape and inspires respect, while the inner chamber provides a space for contemplation.
THE EAGLE
A sculpted American bald eagle perches above the door. As in the Great Seal of the United States, the eagle holds 13 arrows in its left talon, representing the 13 colonies’ fight for freedom. In its right talon, an olive branch symbolizes the nation’s desire for peace,
THE INNER CHAMBER Bronze and marble details and a colorful mosaic ceiling create an elegant setting. Poetry prompts us to consider the meaning of courage and sacrifice.
THE BEACON
Enclosed in a 12-foot sphere and visible for 70 miles, the brilliant light shines as a landmark and reminder of the tower’s enduring meaning.
THE TOWER STAIRCASE A spiral staircase (89 steps) leads to a viewing platform near the top of the tower. The long climb yields spectacular 90-mile views: cast across Massachusetts, north to Vermont, west to New York, and south to Connecticut.
We spent this weekend at Mount Greylock State Reservation , hiking Mount Prospect, Prospect Mountain, Mount Williams, Money Brook Falls, Wilburs Clearing, the Old Summit Road, Deer Hill Trail, Rounds Rock and camped out at the Deer Hill Shelter. Learning about and exploring this highest elevation mountain in the state is truly an amazing experience. Don’t forget to stop in to the Visitors Center!
