Unkamit’s Path section #9 (white blaze) in Westfield, this past year we have been trekking all sections of this historic Native American footpath originally blazed by Henry Warchol and John Murphy from Westfield State in the 1960’s. This long trail crosses the Hilltowns from the New England Trail at Bush Notch to the Appalachian Trail in October Mountain State Forest. The goal is to renew permission and/or re-route where necessary to keep this trail connection legitimate in a few places to keep the legacy alive and open to hikers, MANY volunteers maintain this trail and it has always been a big part of the hiking community here in Western Mass. This section is a half mile between North Elm Street near Arch Road to the Westfield High School and passes through the historic New Haven and Northampton Canal network and over the Powdermill Brook Reservoir and near the Pioneer Valley Railroad.
