Our hike on Tekoa Mountain took us from Reservoir Road in Westfield across Moose Meadow and along the brook climbing the back side of the Tekoa cliffs, this is the least steep way to gain elevation at a slow pace. Once at the ridge we followed the fire road to the giant boulder lookout over Westfield. This section is also Unkamit’s Path (white dot) section 7. The old Western railroad followed the old Indian trail, “Unkamit’s Path”. Early surveyors and government messengers made great use of it, and following tradition adventurers and spirited women traversed it and still do today! The faithful old guide, from whom it took its name, lived in Pittsfield. The trail begins in Washington in October Mountain State Forest at the Appalachian Trail to follow the mountain stream which flows through the meadow below the summit, increasing in size and volume before it reaches the Westfield meadows and the New England Trail. Best and only long trail in the Southern Hilltowns!
