Hubbard River Trail Granville State Forest Group Hike December 3rd 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
GPS Location: 42.06310, -72.96669 Trailhead and Parking

Hike Rating: Easy 2.5 miles total in and back, option to go farther for 4 miles in and back.

Granville State Forest was once the Tunxis Native American tribe’s hunting and fishing grounds. After discovery by English pioneer Samuel Hubbard in 1749 much of it was converted to open pasture and farmland. Under protection, the forest is regenerating with typical northern conifers and hardwoods. The Hubbard River drops 450 feet in 2.5 miles forming pools and waterfalls as it passes over various rock formations.

The River offers a great relatively flat trail that runs alongside, as you hike in further the trail turns gorge like with large rock chasms and the river itself has several waterfalls. Evidence of the CCC is here with culverts and bridges when this state Forest was worked during the great depression and converted to an outdoor recreation area complete with a campground. There are 2,426 acres of passive recreation to explore here and several trails. Moose frequent this area and are often seen especially in winter.

Parking is at Granville State Forest Parking Lot on West Hartland Road, go down the hill, cross the bridge and park in the lot on the left.
