On a rainy Saturday we went out to discover old Chandler Road in Otis. This is one of the earliest settlements as Lee Westfield Road was the first passable road thru Otis, then named Louden. Church Hill is now Otis State Forest DCR land. Hiking the old road in after a few present day homes we made a swamp crossing with an old plank bridge and time rolled back, stone walls and Mrs. Phelps cellar hole was on our right with her china, numerous sythes, shovels, farm tools, an oxen shoe and prohibition era glass. A bit farther down the Hatch cellar hole, with its central chimney and cabinets(first time ever seen), we spent awhile looking at the remains here including a better look inside the chimney. Blandford Bricks were found here too! Where the old road “ends” it continues into the Otis State Forest trail network and that will be another hike! This is #otisma and we #hikethehistory !
